Saudades de Rock

Looks like Extreme’s new CD is a winner. I know I’ll be checking it out today…

Guitar Antiques Roadshow

Man, I hope this comes to a town near me. What a great idea. This made me think… So, suppose you had a $15,000 Gibson ES-175 once owned by Kenny Burrell. How would you sell it? eBay, unfortunately for me, is no longer an option, as my account was recently hacked, and their response wasn’t [...]

Guitar Porn: Parker Fly Deluxe

For some reason, I’ve always loved the look of these guitars. I own an original Steinberger “boat oar,” so maybe my attraction to space-age guitars is hard wired.

Jimmy Herring

I ran across this Jimmy Herring CD review on All About Jazz and tracked down Jimmy on YouTube. Wow. I know this is going to sound strange, but his playing sounds to me like a genetic splicing of Allan Holdsworth and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Here he is playing what sounds like a free jam:

Wes Montgomery

All About Jazz has a nice write up about why every guitarist should own a copy of The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery. And if that doesn’t convince you, here’s Wes playing “Jingles.” Check out his second solo break. Hoo FA!

Guitar Manufacturers Playing Games with Retailers?

According to a Wall Street Journal story: Federal antitrust enforcers are investigating whether makers of musical instruments and audio equipment illegally blocked retailers from discounting their goods, leading to higher consumer prices. Every time I go into a Guitar Center or Sam Ash and look at the new guitar prices, I always think, “Really? For [...]

Another Reason NOT to Play Guitar Hero

So, it’s official. I hate the whole Guitar Hero franchise. I couldn’t be more sick of reading headline after headline of endless clever puns about Guitar Hero and which lame band has signed a deal to create some new lame version of it. I’ve played it. I just don’t get it. I had WAY more [...]

Metallica on Tour

Metallica just started its first tour in 5 years. They put on a great show, that’s for sure. I still say Master of Puppets was the greatest heavy metal album of the 80′s. Good luck guys!

Putting Eyebrows on It

The Montreal Gazette has a nice article about Zappa Plays Zappa with a mini-interview of Dweezil. My favorite part: To keep the process honest, he decided to tackle the hardest part of the demanding instrumental The Black Page, a percussion piece that was not even originally written to be played on guitar. “I felt like [...]

Hendrix Tribute

This seems like it might be a great show: The Experience Hendrix tour, a 19-city tribute that hit the Orpheum Theatre Saturday night, served as a potent (if occasionally indulgent) reminder – as if anyone needed one – of what its namesake’s groundbreaking fusion of cosmic psychedelia and apocalyptic blues still means to many people. [...]

George Benson Honored

George Benson has been a favorite guitar player of mine ever since a guitar teacher turned me on to him. The old stuff. His newer “smooth jazz” tunes never did that much for me, but I can certainly understand why he went in that direction. Anyway, he was recently honored by the National Endowment for [...]

Van Hagar Supergroup Recruits Satch?

According to Antimusic, Joe Satriani has been recruited as the resident guitar god for what I think is the new millinium’s first so-called super group. Now that would be something. So far, they’ve got: Sammy Hagar Michael Anthony Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) ?Joe Satriani?

Wiimote Guitar Effects

This is pretty cool. A guitarist named Rob Morris connected the accelerometer from his Wiimote to his guitar for some pretty cool effects. One thing I thought was pretty funny was that in the live performance in the second half of the video, you can clearly see that he left the Wiimote wrist strap on [...]

Wall Strat Auction

Pink Floyd’s The Wall is one of my all-time favorite albums. Too bad someone in the band couldn’t fork over a better guitar. This is apparently just an off-the-shelf Strat with a cool paint job. Me? I’d bid for the signed pick guard and an original print of Gerald Scarfe’s. You can keep the guitar!

George Lynch Milestone

Congrats to George Lynch (of Dokken, Lynch Mob, etc.) who has been in the biz for 30 years as of next year. He’s a great player!
