kakiBrooklyn-based Kaki King is an amazing guitarist with kick-ass technique that lends itself to her music as opposed to getting in the way of it. On her MySpace page, check out the tunes 2 O’Clock, Bone Chaos in the Castle, and So Much for So Little (my favorite–just bought it). These showcase her technique pretty well. Her music reminds me a lot of Kunek’s CD, Flight of the Flynns. It’s got a funky, dark vibe to it that’s a little depressing (but in a good way).

The Ventura County Star recently interviewed her and had this to say about her:

Goofy guitar goddess Kaki King — her first name pronounced like the stuff soldiers wear or stuff they sell at The Gap — will mesmerize hipsters, lesbians and others with her digital dexterity tonight at SOhO in Santa Barbara.

Rolling Stone crowned her one of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2006, but so far this honor has served only to bolster her ego, not fatten her paycheck. She’s staying busy on the road, promoting her most recent effort, “Dreaming of Revenge.”

King’s not big on describing her own music, but the guitar experts at Gibson.com compared her to finger-style giants like Michael Hedges, Alex DeGrassi and Leo Kottke and hailed her for her “flashy, percussive, two-handed technique.” Her album, they wrote, is “divided equally between dazzling instrumentals and tracks that feature her airy, hypnotic vocals.”

I agree. Here’s a link to her her artist page on Amazon.
