There’s a mildly amusing article over at MusicRadar.com about the Coldplay/Joe Satriani/Cat Stevens mash up, in which Coldplay’s drummer admits that certain “elements” of Coldplay’s music sound like others’ music. I think he means “melodies,” but I could be wrong. And then there’s this:

“There are only eight notes in an octave and no one owns them. And there are probably about 12,000 songs that feature the exact same chord progression. I think it lies on an intent to steal, which we certainly have never done and never would. So it’s unfortunate but it’s the way people are. That’s that.”

The last time I checked, there were 12 notes in an octave, but who’s counting?
