Sitar Version of Sweet Child of Mine

Click the link below to see a great video of a sitar version of Sweet Child of Mine (I didn’t embed it because it starts playing automatically. I wish they wouldn’t do that…). I think this may have been a TV commercial, but I don’t care. It still rocks.

The Teenager Audio Test

I passed the teenager audio test, and here’s the little banner to prove it:

Jeez, you would have thought all those years of guitar would have kind of put the kibosh on hearing super-high frequencies. Guess not.

Motorhead’s Lemmy as Country Superstar

The various ear-bleedingly bad Microsoft “Songsmith” remixes piping through the tubes lately have, in some cases, made me question my sanity. But, I think this one is somehow worse than the rest. In fact, I’m pretty sure in hell all my favorite music would sound something like this:

May God have mercy on our souls.

Heavy Metal Band Names

Doogie Horner created this flow chart of heavy metal band names:

I love the misspellings area, especially the umlauts. Dead on.

Guitar Amp Store

The Guitar Store, in Southamptom, England, (the home of tone since 1987) disguises itself as a giant Fender amplifier at night, when the security gate comes down. The best part? All the dials go to 11. Friggin’ brilliant.
The store received international attention after someone posted the picture to Flickr.

The Most (Un) Wanted Song

In the spring of 1996, David Soldier, in collaboration with artists “Komar and Melamid” (who came up with a way to produce the most-wanted and most-unwanted paintings), posted an online poll to gather data on people’s musical tastes. With 500 responses, he and lyricist Nina Mankin attempted to compose the most-wanted and mos-unwanted song. The [...]

Guitar: Impossible

YouTube user MysteryGuitarMan spent a few bazillion hours splicing together bits and pieces of himself playing The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart.
Over 1000 cuts. 6 hours of guitar tabbing. 1 hour of shooting. God knows how much editing. I know. I was bored.

More of the Worst

Guitar World has unarchived a 2004 article about the top 100 worst solos. Guitar World’s list is far more nuanced than the Spike version I posted about a couple days ago and skewers some of the greats: Hendrix, Santana, Clapton, Angus, etc. I was relieved that Eddie Van Halen did not make the list, proving [...]

Top 7 Worst Guitar Solos of All Time

Spike has been kind enough to compile a list of the top 7 worst guitar solos of all time. I must say, I think I definitely agree with #1. Good lord. Just put the plank down and walk away.
It reminded me of my favorite FAKE worst guitar solo of all time. Brought to you courtesy [...]

Skullcrusher Mountain

The world needs more artists like Jonathon Coulton because humor most definitely DOES belong in music! Skullcrusher Mountain is written from the point of view of an evil genius in love:

Here’s a snippet of the lyrics:

I made this half-pony half-monkey monster to please you
But I get the feeling that you don’t like it
What’s with all [...]

Les Paul Honored

Hmm. I guess they shot this picture right after telling guitar legend and master musical inventor Les Paul that he would be honored by Ritchie Sambora and Slash.

Guitarist Action Figures

I can’t wait until McFarlane Toys comes out with a George Van Eps action figure!
In fact, that may be one way to make the whole guitar hero thing more tolerable for guitarists: Guitar Hero: Hard Core Jazz.
